Salvador Sanchez Jr
11:00:45 AM
yes
So if you can, please type in the chat box thank you.
We'll get started in a few.
Keep in mind that this webinar is being recorded, so if you need to leave before the hour is up. You can go ahead and do so and then you can email me and I will send you the link to this recorded webinar for you to take a look at at a later time once again. I'm just waiting for more people to sign in but please type in the chat box if you can hear me.
And then I'll get started.
OK, I don't want to take up too much of everybody else is time so uh. I'd like to say hello and welcome everyone and thank you. All for joining me today for a Doctor of Education and educational leadership program also known as EDL and today I'm giving a webinar on application tips for this specific app for this specific programme.
My name is ideas and I'm the assistant director for the EDL Program, I've been here for 2 years now and I love every minute of it.
Today I will be going over the application requirements for both the EDL on line and the EDL on campus programs.
So during this web and R I'm going to discuss the mission of USC Rossier and I'll do an overview of the application requirements and then I'll go into detail of each section in the application.
Following that I will discuss the two remaining application deadlines for fall 2020 in mission.
And then finally at the end, we'll have time for you all to type in questions in the chat box. An I'll answer them for you until our hour is up.
So let's get started with our mission statement. Our mission here at USC rest. Here is very important to us so I highly encourage everyone on this webinar today to please take a look at our mission statement in its entire T. It's located on our website on the first tab in the about section so there, you can read the entire mission statement.
Uhm it's really the driving force behind the curriculum staff and faculty throughout the program.
So let me highlight a brief part of our mission statement that you see here on the screen, which reads to prepare leaders to achieve educational equity through practice research and policy within that I want to highlight that educational equity piece, meaning that every student regardless of their zip code deserves a quality education, so that's something that aligns with you and your professional goals.
Then our program could really be a great fit for you, because we are looking for mission driven students, so again. I I really encourage you to take a look at that mission statement an reflect on it, and see if it aligns with your own professional goals.
Because here at USC, Rossier we stand by our students and graduates so from our classrooms to your karere. The commitment to your success is pretty solid and we prepare our graduates to be change agents and equip them with critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary to assess challenges and implement creative solutions.
On this next slide here, you'll see the doctor programs that we offer here at USC. Rossier there is the educational leadership also known as EDL on campus format.
Reyna Macias
11:04:49 AM
yes
Then we have the education leadership EDLK through 12 concentration only which is an on line synchronous delivery format.
Uhm this is often only. This this program is for people who are interested in the K through 12 concentration only.
Uh the 3rd EDT offered is organizational change in leadership also known as Oh CL which is an on line delivery format and then the global executive program, which is a hybrid combining on campus, with on line. We offer only one PhD program an it's called urban education policy, which is an on campus program.
Uhm the next slide, you'll see the Doctor of Education. Comparison comparison, so common questions that I get asked frequently when choosing a doctoral program is the difference between an EDD Anna PhD.
So basically the Y DD develops the field so you are applying the research to real world settings as a working professional in the field, whereas the PhD builds researchers and study advance theory on a topic so you become an expert in that particular research so if you know you would like to be a University professor or apolosi researcher. Someday then the PhD program would probably be a best fit for you.
So YDD is a 3 year program for full time working professionals, whereas the PhD is a four year full time commitment and you are not allowed to work outside of USC Rossier as an admitted PhD enrolled student.
The EDDA program focuses on solutions and taking steps to solve problems of practice whereas a PhD studies are directed towards contributing a knowledge an 1 on one collaboration with faculty and lots of qualitative and quantitative research.
As you know, USC is Tier 1 Research University. So both incorporate research in series and curriculum so as a previous slide showed we offer 4 EDT programs and only one PhD program. I encourage you to also read a very interesting blog on our website. It's titled pH D versus EDD and education.
The next slide shows are prerequisites for the Doctor of Education, an educational leadership program so as you can see a Masters degree is required. An leadership experience, meaning whether it be as a principle. A supervisory role leading student workers, a director of some sort.
Or, a leadership type role in your current position is what we mean by leadership experience. If you have more questions regarding leadership experience. Feel free to email me and we can talk or chat on on the Phone or in person. Alittle bit more about what we mean by leadership experience.
You'll see also that a minimum of 3 to 5 years of full-time professional work experience is required up the majority of students in this program, have been working in their profession for more than 5 years and some have like have our 20, plus so we just want to make sure that you're that you are currently working in the field where you can have thoughtful discussions with your potential cohort mates.
About current problems in practice in the field because a lot of what you're going to learn in the program. You will apply to real world settings, meaning applying your academic research, to current challenges at your work organization. In addition, the required work experience results in a diverse professional background type of cohort so that's why the minimum of 3 to 5 years of full-time professional work experience is is important to us as well.
So here you'll see it's overview of the EDL application requirements.
I'm going to discuss each one in particular, so I'll cover each one of these in detail in the following slides.
Um some of you may have started your application and for those of you that haven't keep in mind. You could go ahead and get started and you can save your information in the application and continue to complete it at a later date. If you need to, you know jump in and out of the application.
So uhm you'll see here we're going to cover today on this webinar. Uhm personal information. The transcripts process you need to upload a resume.
And keep in mind for anybody who's applying to the EDL online. You are required to do a short essay.
In addition to your personal statement so um.
After that I will talk about the 2 letters of recommendation there is an application fee of $90.00 after you submit.
Darlene Aguilar
11:09:56 AM
Can EDD students still work with faculty to do research or be graduate assistants?
You will be required to do a videotaped response to 3 questions and will cover that in detail as well, and as well as the timed writing assessment.
Which are the GRE in lieu of that we do have a 30 minute time driving assessment an I will go over. All that in a few we also welcome international applicants. An I will go over that as well.
So personal information, um, you'll find this UM in your application under personal information and this is where you are going to enter your name as it appears on all your other official documents and here you'll get a chance to even indicate any alternate or previous names in another field that you'll see on the application for example, your maiden name.
Um also in this section is where you're going to enter the email address that you want us. USC Rossier to communicate with you throughout the entire application process. In this section is where you will also indicate your US citizenship status as well.
Next we have transcripts.
As you can see here I put where you would find it in the application. So it's under the quadrant of my application. You're going to click on academic history, then go to colleges attended and click on add a college and here's where you're going to upload your transcripts, so not only are you going to send.
Official sealed unopened transcripts directly to USC Office of graduate admissions, but you are also going to upload copies of your official transcripts to your application.
So keep in mind, um if you do need to order official transcripts. I would advise you to order two sets to keep one for yourself, because if you're if you are applying to other universities.
Um some might ask you for copies as well. Like we do an In addition, it's just nice to have their own set for your own records as well.
So if you don't have your own set you're going to um order official transcript from the Registrar Office at each college or University that you attended.
Ann you're going to have them send one official copy of transcripts to your personal mailing or email address and then the second official copy from the institution directly to USC Office of graduate admissions.
And those can be sent either by Mail or email. So you can find the address on on on our website when you Scroll down to application instructions and click on transcripts. You'll see the mailing address as well as the email address. Please keep in mind that printouts from personal portals are not accepted for either copy of our transcripts, so like I said, You'll find the address on our website to where you need to send the official transcripts directly.
Please do not Mail transcripts to our office, meaning USC Rossier School of Education. They need to go directly to USC Office of graduate admissions.
So they're not going to come to us.
So after transcripts, we have.
So uh where to find it on the application. It's under my application and then you click on supporting information and then you click on documents and that's where you upload your going to add your resume.
So, your resume should basically be an outline to help the admission committee understand the various experiences extracurricular leadership or volunteer roles that have shaped your interest into this particular program.
So when you get to this section, you'll also find that you need to write you need to write in the application uh.
Information that might sound a bit redundant to what you already wrote on your resume and keep in mind. This is where we want you to write in the application in detail your roles and responsibilities within each organization. And here's where you'll get a chance to highlight any special achievements or accomplishments. So you'll find that when you're when you're filling out this section, so I know when you're when you upload your resume and you get to that section and you're like why am I doing this all over again while it's because.
This is a chance where you'll get to just get a little bit more detailed and we get to find out if the these were volunteer. You know paid or unpaid positions? How long you were there and so on.
A real quick some of you might be typing questions in the chat box. Feel free to do so. I will get to those I'm going to save time at the end of our of my presentation to go over Q&A. OK, so I will get to your question after our presentation.
So the following requirement on the screen shows essays.
So uh where to find it on the application is under my application and then it's under the quadrant of program materials and then you click on documents.
So uh your essay responses are basically going to be used to evaluate your personal professional an educational perspectives and experiences and your ability to effectively communicate ideas an organize written thoughts. So responses to your essay questions should be double spaced with a 12 point font and one inch margin on all sides include your full name at the beginning of each document. Please upload each essay as a separate document in the appropriate section.
So for your personal statement we have the prompt for you in advance on our website. So if you take a look at our application detailed requirements. Page Scroll down to application instructions and click on essays. You'll see the personal statement prompt an we want you to basically answer.
Um or address the two part prompt in 500 words or less. And then you will upload that into the section that says personal statement. Now I did mention that if you are applying to the EDL on line program. You do have an additional short answer essay response that you do need to upload and that you will answer in 500 words or less an you can also find that prompt on the website.
Under essay so you can take a look at that before even getting into the application and applying.
Um for both programs you have a chance to upload an optional essay in two 250 words or less.
So to aid the admission committee in evaluating your application. I recommend using this essay to discuss anything in your academic and or professional history that may require additional explanation for example, if you have a low GPA or the transcripts that you upload because the review committee is going to look at your transcripts may have perhaps a lot of these WS or even some apps and you want a chance to explain that.
And this is where you would want to do so, um as well as an employment gap. So if you had your resume. We see that you have an employment gap or even academic app. You might want to just include an essay explaining to the Review Committee. You know why you took a year off or 2.
And so on, so you'll upload this optional essay in the same section where you are uploading your your essays.
The following requirements are your two required letters of recommendation, UM where to find it on the application is under my application. You'll click on program materials and then clip you're going to click on recommendations annual click add recommendation.
So you will see recipe requires 2 letters of recommendation to complete the application. So these letters should come from supervisors and or former instructors or faculty who can comment on significant contributions that you've made in your workplace your leadership skills as well as your commitment to lifelong learning and your ability to perform well in a doctoral level coursework, so preferably. I would recommend 1 academic and one professional.
If you don't have access to an academic recommender because perhaps you've been out of school for some time and you basically have been working then 2 professional is perfectly fine.
To let your recommenders know that when you click add recommendation button in the application. You are going to type in their name and email address in each recommended that you've asked to electronically submit a letter for you so that recommender will automatically receive an email that includes a password and directions for submitting the letter of recommendation for you.
If the recommender doesn't receive the recommendation letter request advise them to check their spam or junk Mail folders. So when you do that and save a complete you will get a notification that your recommender has completed and submitted that recommendation letter for you, please keep in mind that when you do ask for your recommenders to upload that they need it all. The letters need to be typed on official letterhead from the organization and they need to have a signature on them.
If the recommender is not able to obtain company letterhead it needs to be noted somewhere in the letter so please keep that in mind. Um also recommended recommendation letters should be submitted by Recommenders by the application deadline. But they are not required to be submitted at the time you submit your application so for example, you don't have to sit around and wait to click submit my application because you just need to let them know on your own please.
Get these in for me by this deadline and you can go ahead and submit your application. So you don't have to wait around for them to do it for you to complete it. I'll get into this in a bit when I talk about what happens after you submit incomplete and you pay your $90.00 application fee because you wait 3 to 5 days later for to complete your videotape responses and timed writing assessment, which we're going to go on to next.
Please note that recommendation letters are program specific so they can be used to apply to additional programs. And then also, if you withdraw your application from a particular program your letters or recommendation will be deleted along with the application OK.
Application fee so um the application fee is $90.00.
And once you've completed all your quadrants, you'll have they'll all be green and this is where you can go ahead and submit to pay you your feet can be paid by credit or debit card. There is an application fee waiver that is available to applicants who meet certain eligibility criteria an eligibility criteria an instructions for obtaining this fee waiver can be found at the USC graduate admissions website, so if you choose to apply for a fee waiver.
Go to our website and you're going to click on application detail requirements Scroll down to application instructions and then when you see application fee. It'll lead you to the link to go to USC graduate. Admission website where you can obtain that fee waiver so.
If you think you could do people that that do get a fee waiver are USC employees. USC alumni and sometimes due to financial need. But on that website. It kind of gives you all the eligibility criteria to see if you if you meet that but please start your online application, but do not submit the application until the fee waiver is approved, because what happens is USC graduate admissions office will email you a coupon code and that's the coupon code that you enter when you're ready to submit.
Um like I said, you might have to provide supporting documents to demonstrate qualification and you're going to have your fee waiver request approved and then complete and submit your online application.
So when you do that, um in 3 to 5 days after the submission of your application.
You'll be sent an email with instructions regarding how to?
You know complete your videotaped.
Essay responses and your times writing assessment, so let's talk about the video essays first so the video tape as the responses are an opportune iti for you to share your motivation to pursue the program all demonstrating your public speaking ability an organization of ideas. So there's no advanced preparation required an we don't give you those 3 questions in advance.
Um like I said 3 to 5 days after application is submitted you get sent an email with instructions regarding how to record these 3 videotaped essay responses. The email will come from USC Rossier School of Education and the platform that we use is called Kira talent.
So you can only access the video software one time so USC roster is not able to Rezende restart. The video essay. You're going to record your responses using an Internet connected computer with a webcam.
Uhm you can only record each essay once, however, you do have the option to complete practice questions. Prior to recording your official your official essays, so once you begin the official questions. You must complete all 3 questions during the same session each questions. You have a time limit so you have a minute and a half to respond.
The video essays are are part of your application and they will be reviewed by the admission committee in conjunction with the other application materials. So, please keep that in mind. If you encounter any technical problems. You will ask for assistance through the support accurate talent an when you get instructions. You'll be guided to a little chat box or an email if you have any problems at that time.
I do recommend that you submit your application at least one week prior to the deadline that you that you're aiming for is to ensure that you are able to complete the videotape responses prior to the application deadline. So don't wait like you know a day before the deadline. I do recommend that you dress professionally and behave as you would during an in person interview make sure you have a pen and notepad available for taking notes on on the prompt and then of course test your computer Camera and mic beforehand.
So that some regarding the three videotaped essay responses and these questions like I said, We don't have 'em in advance but their videotaped and it's a faculty member kind of asking a question and then you get a few minutes to kind of write down your notes and then you look into the Camera and just answer.
Now the last requirement is uhm the timed writing assessment, so once again. It's going to come from Kira Talent, 3 to 5 days after application is submitted an you'll be sent an email with instructions regarding how to complete the 30 minute time writing assessment.
Darlene Aguilar
11:26:20 AM
Is the application always open?
With this one, I should also mention since it is coming from Kira talent. If you haven't received the assessment within a few days of submitting your application and say it's been more than 3 to 5 days. Check your spam or junk. Mail folders because it might go there since. It doesn't recognize Sakura talent email. Once you begin the assessment you will be provided with the essay topic. So you will have 30 minutes to compose and submit your response don't use any citations or conduct research on the topic while writing a response 'cause you only have 30 minutes.
So as a general rule of thumb, the essay should be structured with an intro containing a thesis statement. Ibadi containing your major points In conclusion.
There's no minimum or maximum word count. However, we recommend a length of 350 to 700 words. The system will automatically submit your response when the time is up. You're allowed to take the on line writing assessment one time only so please keep that in mind. We recommend and once again, the same thing like the videotape responses don't hold off on doing that. I'm writing assessment on you know prior to the application deadline because you do need to kind of.
Cushion the timeline, the timeline. We have here you can do it all in one sitting you can do your videotaped essay responses and then get your time writing assessment over with, but you can also come back to it as well. You have one week to complete both of these since they are coming from Curate Allen, an external platform, we use.
So uh additional requirements for international applicants.
So if you are an international applicant, we welcome you and uh. We do require toefl or Ielts test scores and you will have to upload copies of these test scores to your application under academic history, standardized tests and add a test score.
So, please follow the additional requirements for international applicants instructions on our website for detailed information regarding that please.
So our application deadlines. Uhm we just had one so disregard. The November 1st and these are applicants will be notified January 10th of a of a decision so the next application deadline for fall 2020. Admission is January 15th and everybody gets notified at the same time an you would be notified for February 28th.
Um the 3rd uh application deadline for fall 2020, is March 15th and that's then you'll be notified April 10th.
Keep in mind that we do, um applying to this program.
Uh you're you're automatically considered for a limited USD Rasir Scholarship. It's a limited merit based scholarship, so we give priority consideration to applicants and deadlines.
Bing deadline round one and 2, so um you still have opportunity to.
You are qualified for this limited merit based scholarship. There's no need to submit a separate application. All recipients are selected based on academic achievement demonstrated dedication to the USC Rossier Mission.
An other distinguishing characteristics so all USC. Rossier scholarships are awarded at the time of admission if you do get this limited merit based scholarship. Those range from 5000 to $20,000.
We your application so your opposition to the USC Rossier is evaluated using a holistic review process so keep in mind. Your academic preparation. Your professional work experience personal achievement and commitment to the roster mission or all each considered so there's not 1 single attribute or characteristic that guarantees admission to the program.
That's an application deadlines and then the scholarship on priority.
So the next steps is if you haven't done so already shoot me. An email and you will see my contact information on this last slide. I can send you my calendar link where you can see my real time availability and we can you can schedule a Phone consultation or an in person consultation with me, you'll also be receiving invites to events like this one are webinars. Perhaps some on campus lunch and learns we have.
Mixers coming up, we have several events coming up for perspective students, so just keep an eye out on your emails.
And you'll be getting invites to those.
Darlene Aguilar
11:31:35 AM
If I am applying to the 2021 program, when do I need to complete the fafsa?
Um complete the FAFSA form you can go ahead and store that just so you can see you know what you're eligible for and if you know if you feel like you need to apply for more scholarship. Feel free to email me and I could send you a link to the external private scholarships that you can find on our website. It is extra work because you have to do all the leg work is you have to see if you meet the criteria see if you meet the deadline.
Check out how much each scholarship is giving and of course, that's you know, writing more essays and asking for more letters of recommendation. But if you see that there is free money out there, I say do it.
Uh so yeah, that's the research private scholarships and apply and.
Contact me if you have any questions, so here's my email address.
Feel free to shoot me an email.
But now I would like to answer some of these questions that are popping up in the chat box.
So feel free to answer to go ahead and.
Right any questions, you may have for me and I'll answer them 'cause. We still have 30 minutes to go.
So uhm somebody ask Annie D students still work with faculty to do research or be graduate assistants.
Well, depending on the concentration that you that you choose for the EDL on campus program. You will be assigned of faculty chair who will help and guide you in assist you and can mentor you up but as far as doing research an being a grad assistant that might be more on the PhD site. We don't really have any grad assistant ships in the Ed program because this.
Is geared towards working professionals so the majority of our students in the program all have day jobs whether it be teachers. During the day principles. District administrators on people in higher. Ed that work in student. There's financial aid office there. We have military we have police officers we have counselors.
Salvador Sanchez Jr
11:33:44 AM
Work Experience: Does it have to be in the field we are going into? I.e. program directing college access and persistence programs and wanting to get into the higher ed option of the Ed D?
What are the professional my leaving off so yeah? I mean these are all people who who work during the day so as as it enrolled student you will have an opportunity to work with a faculty person assigned to your concentration.
As far as the application always open. Yes, for fall 2020 admission since we have only one start date. It'll be open up until the last deadline, so depending on how many students. We've admitted by the last deadline. We can have rolling application dates and those can go as far up to.
But after that, we close it up and then August 1st is when we open up for than you.
OK, going on uh if I'm applying to the twenty twenty one program. Where do I need to complete the Fasa so you probably will want to wait till we open up the next cycle. So not until August 1st because I will say tuition does increase 3 to 5% every year. So currently tuition is 1928 per unit. So just keep in mind that it doesn't go up 3. Around 3% every year so I would recommend that you wait till August 1st.
If you are applying for the twenty twenty one program.
OK so somebody else wrote work experience does it have to be in the field. We are going into for example program directing college access in persistence programs and wanting to get into the higher end option of the DD.
Uh we prefer that you do have experience in that field because you will be applying real world application to that so yes I'm I would say yes I'm assuming you're doing the higher Ed concentration.
And you know, we can chat a bit more offline and we can discuss what your options are like say you don't want to do higher end, but you're kind of aiming towards uh. I don't know it's like sad side concentration as long as you have access to certain things because you will be doing a dissertation in practice, meaning the concentration that you choose that will tell you the type of dissertation that you will be on.
That you will be doing, um like for example, like you, said, like if we were doing higher. Ed the higher end concentration your dissertation in practice would be studying on an existing problem of practice and complete of traditional 5 chapter dissertation. So say you are really interested. You work in higher Ed, but you're interested in educational psychology concentration well.
Salvador Sanchez Jr
11:36:56 AM
Thank you!...Are there any foreseeable changes in the application process for 2021?
Their dissertation and practice is still studying existing problem of practice an completing A5 chapter dissertation. But here you also have an option of designing curriculum to address an existing problem of practice so there's a little difference, there in that dissertation. But yeah, let's chat more? Why don't you email me and we could set up a Phone consultation so we could talk about your work experience on which concentration would be best for you OK.
Um anybody else, I see we didn't have a lot of questions but.
I'm here to answer any other questions on let's see.
Yeah, no we don't see any other changes in the application process.
At least yeah, I don't see any changes for twenty twenty one so if you are here, Ann interested in 2021.
At least, there wasn't any changes this past year, so I don't see any for twenty twenty one so good question.
Salvador Sanchez Jr
11:37:34 AM
I did not see the GRE on the application requirements, is it required?
Yeah, so we don't require the jury uhm.
Yeah, I would recommend if it's not required do not submit because I mean. You have to take the test and I believe if you do have the test. It has to be up.
Let me give you the exact I think it has to be as recent of.
Oh, it the scores cannot be more than 5 years old by the first day of classes. So I mean, if you haven't taken the jury? Don't do. It just for us. But if you're shopping around and other universities require it and you just got like a really stellar score that you kind of want to. You know submit you can, but it's not required so I say don't do it.
And don't forget in lieu of that, we're doing that I'm writing assessment.
Any other questions, I think I answered everybody here.
I don't want to have a lot of dead air but that basically covers my Doctor of Education and educational. Leadership application tips web and R but please feel free to email me if you have any.
Other questions that I can answer for you offline so I hope this was informative and.
Darlene Aguilar
11:39:22 AM
Thank you!
Salvador Sanchez Jr
11:39:23 AM
Thank you for the information.
You know, I I look forward to meeting you all, either virtually or on the Phone or in person so until then.
We all say here fight on have a great rest of your day.
Reyna Macias
11:39:36 AM
thank you!
